Emergency Pet Care

It is important to know what to do when your pet has an urgent health issue. At Colonial Terrace Animal Hospital, we are a general hospital. This means that our primary focus is general wellness and the most common injuries and illnesses. We also treat urgent, intensive, and emergency cases.
What is an emergency?
  • Seizures
  • Prolonged or severe vomiting and diarrhea
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Injury from an accident (hit by car, fight with another animal, etc)
  • Exposure to a potentially toxic substance
  • Crying out in pain
  • Severe lameness
  • Weakness and non-responsiveness
  • Difficulty breathing
The clinic is currently open:
  • Monday – Friday: 7:30am – 5:30pm
  • Saturday: 8am – 12pm

If you have a medical emergency, call the clinic at 563-556-2667. During business hours, our staff will triage your pet’s case, and help direct you to make sure your pet gets the care they need. Please be aware that an emergency exam fee may apply.

If you are calling afterhours, a telephone answering service will answer and get some basic information. For established clients, this information will be given to the veterinarian who is on emergency call. The veterinarian will then call you back and discuss the best route for your pet. The following general options will be reviewed depending on each individual case.

  1. The veterinarian may be able to give you information over the phone for you to help manage your pet’s medical concern at home until an appointment time
  2. The veterinarian may meet you at the clinic to evaluate your pet. If this is the case, the veterinarian will call in extra staff to help as well, depending on the needs of your pet. PLEASE NOTE: It can take up to 30 minutes for our vet staff to be able to get to the clinic and emergency fees will apply
  3. The veterinarian may recommend that you take your pet to a 24-hour veterinary emergency clinic. Reasons for this recommendation may include:
    1. Availability of round-the-clock care
    2. Lower initial exam fees since they are staffed in off-hours
    3. Accessibility to specialists and more advanced equipment
