Day of Surgery
On the Morning of Surgery:
You will receive a call the night before from our intake technician to go over feeding and medication instructions. A specific appointment time with the technician will also be made at that time. You will need about 20 minutes the morning of surgery to complete the paperwork and answer any questions or concerns you may have about your pet’s procedure.
The morning of the procedure, we will confirm what all is to be done that day with your pet, and we will ask about current medications your pet is on, both prescription and OTC. We will need to have the name and telephone phone number of the best qualified adult to answer any questions that may arise. A pick-up time will then be confirmed or scheduled.
We will have some paperwork that will need to be completed, including a surgery authorization and optional DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) form. Our technician can answer any questions you may have about these forms.
When your pet’s procedure is completed that day, our surgery technician will call the contact number and let you know your pet is in recovery. There may be times that we have to adjust the time you are scheduled to pick up your pet, depending upon emergencies and how your pet is waking up, and we will contact you if there is a change or delay.
For your pet’s benefit, we like to have your pet here for a short time prior to surgery. This allows them to acclimate to the smells and sounds and settle in. It also allows time for the pre-medications, including pain medications, to be in your pet’s system prior to their procedure. You may bring a comfort item from home, like a special blanket or toy, to make the experience easier for your pet. Depending upon their size, our canine patients recover either in the treatment area wrapped in blanket on a baby mattress, or in an infant Pack-N-Play. Our feline patients recover in a warm towel in a warm Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Your pet will be monitored by a trained staff member while they recover.
